Marion Liston
Medical Professional Insitute

In 1981, Marion H. Liston from Somerville began her career in the medical field at Harvard University Health Services in the medical records department. After several months, Marion's career was put on hiatus while she took care of her ailing mother so she would not have to go into a nursing home. Her mother passed away that year and Marion returned to Harvard's medical records department. Marion continued to work there for several years getting to know how the medical records were put together and learning how to check insurance coverage. But Marion craved more than what the medical records department could offer her. She decided she wanted to work more closely with the doctors and be involved in patient's care. Marion applied for a secretarial position where she could assist clinicians and have more patient contact. There were limits to what Marion could do to assist the physicians, because she did not have her certificate in medical assisting. So in January of 2001, Marion decided to attend Medical Professional Institute's Medical Assistant program. She knew going back to school would be tough, especially since she worked full-time at Harvard from 8am to 4pm and then had to take two trains to attend her classes four nights a week from 6pm to 10pm. All her hard work and dedication paid off in June 2001, when she received her certificate in Medical Assisting. Marion has said that going to Medical Professional Institute has broadened her horizons in the medical field and her experience has shown her that she can do anything that she puts her mind to. She now feels confident performing all the tasks associated with being a Medical Assistant.
