Tiago Cardoso
Butera School of Art

BUTERA SCHOOL OF ART is proud to nominate TIAGO CARDOSO, of Taunton, for an Outstanding Achievement Award. Tiago was born with a facial deformity called a cleft palate. He had more than 13 surgeries in early childhood and almost died in Portugal because they were unable to provide the surgeries. He came to America when he was two to get surgery he needed. From age 2 through 7, his family of six lived in a small one-room garage. At age 18, Tiago had many obstacles to overcome when he considered attending Butera School of Art. Tiago had not seen his parents in two years since they moved to Portugal. He was responsibile for taking care of his younger brother, paying rent, utilities, groceries, clothing, etc., in order to provide a healthy home environment. Tiago also endures a 4-hour daily commute to and from school to attend the Sign Art program. He works at McDonalds after school from 6PM to 2AM and weekend night shifts from 8PM until 7AM. Tiago is a hard working, conscientious, kind person who is always willing to help out. He impresses everyone at school and has such a positive outlook on life. Tiago is loved by students and faculty alike and is an inspiration to those around him. He also volunteers at a homeless shelter in the soup kitchen. With his excellent sign painting skills and gracious personality, Tiago is an asset to our school, our industry and our community. Tiago is an example of why we choose to be in the educational field. It has been an honor having Tiago attend the Butera School of Art.
