Katie Lynn Travers
New England Hair Academy

For as long as she could remember Katie Lynn Travers, of Danvers, wanted to be a hairstylist. The first day in the Cosmetology program at the New England Hair Academy (NEHA) was the happiest of her life. However, less than three weeks after starting school, Katie was told that her mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and require extensive surgery. At only 21 years old Katie soon found herself caring for her ailing mother, attending school and working at a part-time job. Some days her mother was too sick to be left alone and Katie had to miss school. With her attendance dropping Katie faced suspension. Eventually her mother's health improved and Katie was able to fully concentrate on her cosmetology studies. Soon she was able to afford her own apartment. Unfortunately, on December 4, 2002 a four-alarm fire completely destroyed her apartment building leaving Katie with nothing but the clothes she wore to school that day. But not one to quit, Katie, with the help of her fellow NEHA students replaced clothing and school supplies. Katie has shown a great determination to succeed despite all her hardships and on March 18, 2003 she graduated with a 90% GPA, fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a hairstylist. The New England Hair Academy is sure that her Katie's persevering attitude will help her reach all her goals in life.
